Sherry Family Page

By Barry January 6, 2009

Based on correspondence and queries on the Sherry family, I would estimate that around 75% of people named Sherry originate in Ireland. The rest have the Sherry surname as it became more "Americanized" from the original language. Some names were changed deliberately at Ellis Island or other immigration centers, while others, like my family name, adopted the spelling as English became the predominant language in the new country.

My ancestry traces back to the Pennsylvania Germans, specifically, Henry Scherie Sr. Henry was in Northumberland Co., Pa. and was born between 1776 and 1790, depending which census records one accepts. He married Dorothea Shaffer and in the 1830s moved "west" from Northumberland Co. to Ringgold Twp., Jefferson Co., Pa.

We have not been successful in finding Henry's parents so all known descendants come from his children, all of whom were in the Ringgold area in the 1880s.

The Internet is great but I don't want to put up private information including full names, pictures, and birth dates online. But I need your help in verifying, correcting, and adding to my database. So what is on this site is my data but it is behind a password-protected firewall. This is a protected site available only to family members. If you have been directed to this site and believe you should have access because you are a family member and can help me improve this data base, please contact me.

If you are of associated lines and want to exchange information on this Sherry family, please contact me and I will answer your questions.
